GTM4WP 2.1 beta 2 is ready for testing
GTM4WP 2.1 beta 2 for Google Tag Manager on WordPress removes the deprecated WebToffee v2 and YouTube video tracking. Check your GTM setup first.
The second public beta of GTM4WP 2.1 is available for testing. Like the first one, it is published only on GitHub; wordpress.org keeps offering 2.0.5 as the stable version until the final release. The beta 1 announcement describes what is new in 2.1 as a whole. This post covers what changed since then.
Three removals that can affect your GTM setup
All three were deprecated in earlier versions and are now removed. Please check your container before you update a site:
- WebToffee GDPR Cookie Consent v2.x integration: WebToffee v3.x and newer connect to Google Tag Manager on their own, so update WebToffee if a site still runs v2.x. The cookie_consent_update and cookie_consent_<category> events stop, so review any trigger built on them.
- The “YouTube video events” option: use the built-in YouTube Video trigger of Google Tag Manager instead, with its “Add JavaScript API support to all YouTube videos” setting turned on. Triggers on the plugin’s YouTube events stop firing. The YouTube video tracking page describes the setup.
- The orderData.customer.billing.emailhash value, deprecated since 1.20: a GTM variable that still reads it should read orderData.customer.billing.email_hash, which carries the same value.
Other changes since beta 1
- Easy Digital Downloads: the order data uses the same key names as the WooCommerce integration, and the cache-safe data layer now delivers the customer data, the cart and missed purchases for EDD stores as well.
- Site Health: a new test warns when the tag restriction list blocks every tag. On multisite, the report also shows who can change the container.
- Reporting in the default language: without WPML or Polylang, each of the four default language options now shows a note that names the filter it needs.
- The fixes released in 2.0.5 are included, together with a fix for WooCommerce Product Bundles, where a bundle with an out-of-stock product in it was reported as in stock.
The release notes list every change.
Release plan
The plan from the first beta is unchanged:
- October 12: beta 3 or the first release candidate
- October 19: release candidate, skipped if the previous build needs no bigger change
- October 26: final release on wordpress.org
These dates can still move if something unforeseen comes up during testing.
How to test
Please test the beta on a staging site, not on a live store. Download duracelltomi-google-tag-manager-2.1.0-beta2.zip from the release page and upload it under Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin. WordPress offers to replace the installed version. The source code archives that GitHub generates are not installable.
Please report anything you find on GitHub with “2.1 beta” in the title. Feedback from sites running Easy Digital Downloads, WPML or Polylang is especially welcome.
